TOM is TUM.co.nz's free online personal shopper. You tell him who you are feeding, what you want to spend and anything you cannot eat, and in about two minutes he builds a full week of fresh food from our range. You see every item before you pay, you can swap or remove anything, and you check out on TUM.co.nz as normal.
What is TOM?
TOM is a personal shopper built into TUM.co.nz, the Auckland online grocer for fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, bakery, dairy and pantry staples. Instead of scrolling through hundreds of products, you answer a few short questions and TOM puts together a shopping list that suits your household. He works on your phone or computer at tom.tum.co.nz, and he is free to use.
How does TOM work?
- Tell TOM where you are. Auckland (Pukekohe to Orewa, next weekday delivery) or elsewhere in New Zealand by courier.
- Tell him who is eating. How many adults and how many children.
- Set your budget. Type the amount you want to spend on groceries for the week.
- Tell him about allergies and diets. Tick any allergies and choose from seven diets: dairy free, gluten free, keto, low carb, paleo, vegan and vegetarian.
- Choose your meals. How many dinners, breakfasts and lunches you want covered, and whether to add extra fruit, snacks or pantry items.
- Say which meats you love or would rather skip, and add anything else TOM should know.
- Check your list and pay. TOM shows you every item and the total. Swap or remove anything you like, then check out on TUM.co.nz.

What does a TOM shop look like?
Here are two real lists TOM built. Prices change week to week, so treat them as examples.
- 2 adults, $100 budget (TOM's starter list): 5 dinners with meat and vegetables, plus fruit. That week it was chicken drumsticks, beef mince, tarakihi fillets, pork sirloin steaks and lamb mince, with potatoes, carrots, broccoli, onions, pumpkin and cauliflower, and bananas, apples, mandarins, kiwifruit and oranges. It came to just under $100.
- Family of 4 (2 adults and 2 children), about $120: 5 dinners with meat and six kinds of vegetables, plus fruit.
Not sure where to start? On TOM's first screen, choose Just give me a starter list. TOM asks only about allergies and diets, then builds the $100 starter list for two adults, which you can change before you pay.
Will TOM stay within my budget?
Yes. TOM builds your list to fit the budget you give him. If your list would come to more than your budget, he first swaps in cheaper options where he can. If it still does not fit, he tells you and lets you choose what changes, such as one fewer dinner or fewer extras. He will not quietly cut meals without asking you.
Can TOM cater for allergies and special diets?
Yes. TOM asks about allergies before he builds your list and leaves out products we know contain the allergens you tick. He covers the main food allergens, including peanuts, tree nuts, milk, egg, wheat and gluten, sesame, soy, fish and shellfish, and you can add others of your own. If you place an order, your allergies are noted on it for our packing team. Always check product labels yourself, especially for a severe allergy.
For diets, TOM can build a list that is dairy free, gluten free, keto, low carb, paleo, vegan or vegetarian. You can also browse those ranges yourself in our Shop by Diet collections.
Do I need an account, or to sign up to anything?
No. You do not need an account to use TOM, and there is no subscription. Your answers stay in the page while you shop and are not saved to an account. When you are ready, you check out through the normal TUM.co.nz checkout.
Where does TUM.co.nz deliver?
We deliver across Auckland, from Pukekohe to Orewa, on the next weekday when you order by 8pm. Delivery is free on Auckland orders of $70 or more, and $10 below that. Outside Auckland, we courier to eligible addresses across mainland New Zealand, and you see the delivery cost at checkout before you pay. See our delivery details.
Why is he called TOM?
TOM is named after our own cat, a black and white tuxedo cat. Look out for him in the corner of our home page, where he likes to wave, clean his paws and, now and then, take a walk across your screen.
